Do Smart Luggage Tags Need Batteries? What Travellers Should Know Before Flying

We travel with more technology than ever.
Phones.
Headphones.
Smartwatches.
Tablets.
Power banks.
Location trackers.
Even our luggage is becoming smarter.
At the same time, airlines, airports and aviation regulators are becoming increasingly vocal about how battery-powered devices should be packed when we fly.
It raises an interesting question.
Does every smart product we attach to our luggage actually need another battery?
The answer is no.
And understanding the difference between battery-powered tracking, powered smart luggage and passive identification can make preparing for your next flight a little simpler.
Why batteries in luggage are getting more attention
Lithium batteries power much of the technology we carry every day.
For the vast majority of the time, they do that safely.
But aviation authorities are particularly careful about batteries because damaged, faulty or incorrectly packed lithium batteries can overheat and create a fire risk.
In July 2026, the UK Civil Aviation Authority warned passengers to “pack right for a safe flight” as millions prepared for their summer holidays.
The regulator estimated that around 30 million passengers would leave the UK during July and August, with the average traveller carrying four lithium-powered devices.
It also reported that incidents involving overheating or malfunctioning passenger devices had nearly doubled between 2024 and 2025.
The message is not that passengers should stop travelling with technology.
It is that we need to understand what we are carrying and where it should be packed.
Power banks and spare batteries need particular care
Different types of battery-powered products are treated differently.
Power banks and spare lithium batteries should not be packed in checked baggage and generally need to travel with the passenger in the cabin.
Vapes are also subject to specific restrictions.
Manchester Airport reinforced that message in August 2026, warning passengers that incorrectly packed battery-powered items can be removed when checked baggage is screened.
The exact requirements can vary by airline, destination and type of device, so travellers should always check the current rules for the airline they are flying with.
But there is a useful wider lesson.
Not everything described as “smart luggage technology” works in the same way.
Are AirTags allowed in checked luggage?
This is where the distinction matters.
Small location trackers such as an Apple AirTag contain a battery.
But that does not mean they are automatically prohibited from checked luggage.
International aviation rules include an exception for small, low-energy baggage tracking devices within defined battery limits.
British Airways, for example, allows compliant smart baggage tags such as AirTags to remain active in checked luggage where the battery falls within those limits.
Other airlines may have their own requirements.
So if you use a battery-powered location tracker, check the policy of the airline operating your flight before you travel.
The important point is this:
Battery-powered trackers have a legitimate role.
